The story of Dr Harold Shipman, an English GP who began killing his patients as a junior doctor and continued to do so for more than 20 years is a fascinating one. Shipman injected his patients with lethal doses of diamorphine, a medical form of heroin, in the privacy of their own homes and then sat and watched them until they were dead. This usually occurred within minutes. Afterwards, he would commiserate with relatives, offering words of sympathy and then simply continue on his rounds, as if killing patients was part.
